Area briefs for March 22

The Human Papillomavirus, known as HPV, vaccine is now available through the Colorado Vaccines for Children program for VFC eligible females 9 to 18 years of age.

The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association provides vaccinations for children under age 19 years on a sliding scale of $0 to $14.50 per shot. No child will be refused a vaccine due to an inability to pay.

Additionally, VNA can provide the vaccine to eligible low-income women 19 to 26 who have no insurance under Merck's Patient Assistance Program.

The vaccine protects against four major types of HPV. These include types of HPV that cause approximately 70 percent of cervical cancer and 90 percent of genital warts. HPV is spread through sexual contact.

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the United States.

Grow easy, gardening experts tell first-timers

You bought a home during the winter, and now that the weather is getting warm you're eager to get out in the yard and dig. The only problem is, you know next to nothing about gardening.

What should you do?

Very little, advises one nationally known gardening expert.

"I always tell people that for the first year, they should concentrate on the inside of their home, not outdoors," says Michael Weishan, co-author of the book "The Victory Garden Companion" (Collins, $29.95).

But opinions differ: "Dig in," says another national expert. "It's your garden, after all," says Bonnie Blodgett, one of the authors of "Midwest Top 10 Garden Guide" (Sunset, $19.95). "Where else can you do precisely what you want, when you want? When I am handed a plot of earth, I go at it immediately, assuming I can jam a spade into it.

Landscape Awards Recognize Residential, Commercial Beautification ...

The City is looking for outstanding examples of residential and commercial landscaping for its third annual Gaithersburg Beautification Awards. Designed to honor those who value beautifully landscaped and well-maintained properties, and who work diligently to help make Gaithersburg such a lovely City, the awards will be presented on October 1, 2007.

Any commercial or residential property within the City limits may be nominated. The City's Beautification Committee members will judge the nominees in June and July, and will select one winner from the many commercial and residential categories listed on the nomination form. Honorable mentions may be awarded if deemed necessary.

Judges will be looking at the functional and aesthetic aspect of design, use of plant and hardscape materials, maintenance, and suitability of design to purpose.
